Midcoast Internet Solutions
System
News & Notices
May 1999
- May 27, 1999 2:30pm. A very short outage for some customers is
in effect for a few minutes while Bell Atlantic switched over one of our
internet connections to some faster equipment and data circuits in
Portland. Update: Bell Atlantic corrected this at about 5pm. This was due
to poor record keeping at BA regarding the setup of how our circuit IDs
connect up.
- May 26, 1999 2:00pm. The router zoombrew was sucessfully
swapped for a higher performance router.
- May 26, 1999 At some point late in the day, we will be
replacing an important router (zoombrew) for increased performance. If the
current router is working fine all day, we will replace it at midnight. If
the current router is not performing as well we'd like, we may choose to
do the swap sooner. This will cause a loss of connectivity for about two
minutes when the swap takes place.
- May 24, 1999 The Sell and Swap BBS had some errors over the
weekend. This has been corrected by restoring a backup.
- May 18, 1999 Good News. Now that we've got the phone lines
we've wanted, we're increasing the quantity of access provided. $20/month
users will now get 60 hours. $30/month users will now get 160 hours. Other
items such as free usage between midnight and 10am, webhosting allowances,
email accounts, and such are unchanged. More details will be coming out in
an email newsletter in the next day or two which will better explain
things.
- May 12, 1999 11:00am. We have noted some performance inconsistancies on our
upstream to the net thru C&W. We are keeping an eye on it.
- May 11, 1999 4:00pm. Mailspinner has been installed on the new
lincoln.midcoast.com and is doing its thing nicely.
- May 11, 1999 8:50am. A configuration error, as a result of the upgrade, was
preventing dial-in authentication from approx. 4:30am - 8:50am. Once again we state that
the new lincoln is running soundly.
- May 11, 1999 3:00am. The upgrade to lincoln went very well. Mail and
web services are functioning properly. The web counter for lincoln pages is not yet
functioning, but this is a minor item in comparison to the magnitude of upgrading a
production server. Mail services were down on lincoln from midnight to 2:30 am. Web
services were only interrupted briefly at 2:30. Login down time was kept to less than an
hour. Please use the Trouble Ticket form
to report any problems.
- May 10, 1999 Lincoln will be undgoing some maintenence tonight, and will be
taken offline for up to two hours at midnight. We will be performing a total
upgrade to the system that will result in better service. The new server has been
running on the side for several months to ensure that it is reliable and we have made
several dry runs at the data transfer. Anyone with an @lincoln.midcoast.com address
will be unable to log on as the authentication will not function - all incoming mail
will be spooled. Users with an @midcoast.com address will not be affected.
- May 10, 1999 8:50am. the webserver Kona was rebooted this
morning.
- May 6, 1999 7:00pm. The new washington POP has been increased to 28 lines
total. In order to get the hardware out of the Library, we had to wait unitl 3pm to gain
access. JasonP worked on the new ports until 6:30pm. Please fill out a Trouble Ticket if
you encounter difficulties with the new lines at 845-3050 location.(btw, the old number
of 845 2080 still works and is now the middle of the Washington hunt group)
- May 6, 1999 2:30pm. The BA problem seems to have been fixed.
More details as they become available.
- May 6, 1999 9:00am. There is a Bell Atlantic problem in
Portland which is affecting some customers ability to browse outside of
Midcoast. Others are not affected. We expect this to be resolved shortly.
If the modem pool you use is affected by this temporary problem which is
beyond our control, you can use our proxy server to get around this
problem. Instructions are here.
- May 5, 1999 Washington The 845-2080 is out of service.
Please use the new number 845-3050. The lines that were running the old Washington POP are being relocated to the new facility.
- May 5, 1999 Most of the 56k/v.90 modem servers will be upgraded to the latest
OS release (as was done to nodoze) tonight after Midnight. It will be neccessary to
reboot each server once the upgrade is complete. This may cause your connection to drop
if the reboot occurs while you are online. This will not affect Washington/Liberty
customers. It will also not affect users of the 563-7330 or 563-6644 Damariscotta analog
modem systems.
- May 5, 1999 The newest Modem server "nodoze" was upgraded to the latest
revision of the modem code this afternoon. The "flash" failed and the unit had to be
reconfigured from scratch. This *might* have caused a few busy signals on the 563-6622
number between 4-5:30pm. "nodoze" will be added to the "who's on" web page this
evening.
- May 4, 1999 12:00am - 24 additional lines have been installed in
Damariscotta on the v.90 modem server bank. The number is still 563 6622. This gives MIS
48 v.90 ports on top of the approx 85 standard 33.6 lines. If you encounter a busy on
either the 563-6644 or 563-7330 numbers feel free to use the 563 6622 number. Please
note that some older 28.8/33.6 modems do not work well with the newer v.90 modems.
Please call (or email!) the MIS support staff if you have any questions.
- May 4, 1999 Construction Ahead - Additional services are
scheduled to be installed at the Damariscotta POP today (so we've been told). There will
be a short interruption of service to the 563-6622 number as a result. We will post a
more specific time when we get it. Please stay in line and "give 'em a break"! (This
was scheduled for 5/03 and previously 04/30, but the telco was unable to complete the
installation.)
